The Shift in E-commerce Architecture
As e-commerce continues to evolve, the demand for faster, more personalized experiences has led to a major shift in how stores are built. Traditionally, Shopify stores were built exclusively using Liquid, Shopify's templating language. While powerful, Liquid has its limitations when it comes to extreme performance and complex front-end interactions.
What is Headless Commerce?
Headless commerce decouples the front-end (the "head") from the back-end (the "body"). In this setup, Shopify handles the logic, checkout, and product management, while a modern framework like Next.js handles the presentation layer. They communicate via Shopify's Storefront API.
The Performance Advantage
By using Next.js, you can achieve near-instant page loads. Features like Static Site Generation (SSG) and Incremental Static Regeneration (ISR) mean your product pages can be pre-rendered and served from a CDN, virtually eliminating server response time.
Which One is Right for You?
Custom Shopify (Liquid) is still the best choice for 90% of brands. It's faster to develop, easier to maintain, and supports all Shopify apps out of the box. However, if you are a high-volume brand looking for total design freedom and sub-second page loads, Headless is the way forward.
